DO+ONE+TWO is a social enterprise that stimulates the use of locally sourced natural building materials in urban architecture.

We research, design, write and educate. Simply put, we do and we share. Hence the name.

Natural building models

We are what we build

The transition towards circular design creates opportunities for a material centred design approach. An approach in which the origin of materials is taken into account, together with their true social and environmental costs. And an approach in which healthy spaces constructed with non-toxic materials are the norm. We as designers and builders can make a difference by choosing healthy, locally sourced natural and sustainable materials. After all, we are what we build.

Natural building materials

Natural and bio-based materials are healthy, breathable, regenerative, relatively easy and safe to use, and climate compatible. Earth and natural fibre materials passively ensure thermal comfort and good indoor air quality. Creating healthy spaces where people want to be. Natural building materials can be used over and over again, applied without the need for complicated technology and can always be sourced locally, wherever you are.

Choosing local

Locally sourced materials represent the regional heritage, both cultural and natural, in the urban built environment. They are a pivotal part of a sustainable aesthetic and celebrate diversity in the urban fabric, offering a diverse palette of colours, textures and patterns that radiate sustainability and naturally fit into the region. The true costs of local materials are transparent and easily traceable. And, they also have an interesting story to tell.

Olaf Kramer

Hi, my name is Olaf (37) and I am the founder of DO+ONE+TWO. After studying Architecture, Urbanism and Building Sciences at the Delft University of Technology, I spent most of my years of design practice in Brazil. A land of unparalleled natural abundance, where I got inspired by the beauty of natural building materials and their many possible applications.

Most recently I worked on the adaptive reuse project for the historic Cassino da Urca , at the foot of the famous Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro. In collaboration with Brazilian BF Arquitetura and Catalan Josef Ferrando Architects, I was, as project manager, responsible for leading the participatory design process, the sourcing of sustainable materials and supervising the LEED certification.

In addition, I am a part of the sustainable collective CAUSA , also based in Brazil. Together we take on a wide range of projects, always with a positive social and ecological impact. We organize workshops and events, design sustainable projects and love to get our hands dirty.

DO+ONE+TWO does research and participates in natural building projects in Europe, South America and Africa.

With financial support of the Creative Industries Fund NL , in 2021 DO+ONE+TWO has initiated a research project on the use of local natural building materials in Dutch urban architecture.

The project includes an analysis of the true costs of both natural and common building materials, mapping of existing and potential producers, a study into legal compliance, such as the new BENG building code, and a cross-sector dialogue for regional opportunities to arise and develop.

By bringing together insights, expertise and experience of a diverse set of stakeholders, the project wants to explore new and existing interests, generate public debate and ultimately bridge the gap between the city and its hinterland.

DO+ONE+TWO is always looking for renovation and adaptive reuse projects to work on. Anywhere in the world. However, we are particularly interested in working in The Netherlands, Brazil and Portugal.

Renovation with natural building materials

DO+ONE+TWO writes informative articles and digital content about sustainable architecture and natural building.

An informative article on bioregionalism, and other articles, will be published soon.

DO+ONE+TWO creates online educational modules that capacitate professionals to locally source and apply natural building materials in their projects.

Online modules on the mapping of available natural materials, calculating true costs, technical application, legal compliance, BIM data and sustainable certification, which are tailored to local specifics, language, culture, work methods and challenges.
